Plastering is a great way to update your home and add a new level of sophistication to your walls. If you're a beginner, however, plastering can seem like a daunting task. But don't worry, with some patience and practice, anyone can learn the basics of plastering. In this step-by-step guide, we'll cover the basic plastering techniques for beginners, including mixing plaster, preparing walls, and applying plaster.

  1. Prepare the Surface: Before you start plastering, make sure the surface is clean and free from dust, dirt, and loose paint. Remove any flaking or loose plaster and fill any holes or cracks with a suitable filler. Once the surface is dry, sand it down until it is smooth.
  2. Mix the Plaster: The next step is to mix the plaster. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and mix the plaster in a clean container with clean water. Mix the plaster to a smooth and creamy consistency.
  3. Apply the First Coat: Use a hawk and trowel to apply the first coat of plaster to the surface. Hold the hawk with your non-dominant hand and load the trowel with plaster with your dominant hand. Apply the plaster in a thin and even layer.
  4. Apply the Second Coat: Once the first coat has dried, use the hawk and trowel to apply the second coat. This coat should be thicker than the first coat and should be applied in a diagonal direction to the first coat.
  5. Smooth the Surface: Once the second coat has dried, use a plasterer's float to smooth the surface of the plaster. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and use circular motions to smooth the surface.
  6. Finish the Surface: Once the surface is smooth, use a trowel to finish the surface. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle and use sweeping motions to create a smooth and polished finish.

Plastering can be a messy job, so make sure you protect your floors and furniture. It's also a good idea to wear gloves and a mask to protect your skin and lungs. With some patience and practice, anyone can master the basics of plastering.
